As the days roll by we get closer and closer to the start of the college football season. The college football portal has been a substantial impact on all of college football. It helped many teams including the University of South Florida Bulls. The Bulls obtained two defensive backs and a linebacker. The Bulls seem to fade on defense last year as the season came unraveled. The players that they obtained through the portal were Patrick Macon from Oklahoma State, KJ Sails for the University of North Carolina, and Devin Studstill from Notre Dame. All three are now enrolled at the University of South Florida.
Like I said before the USF Bulls seem to fade down the stretch. Now I am not saying it was just on defense. The Bulls seemed to have problems stopping their opponents. When this occurred, it put more pressure on the offense. Blake Barnett injured his shoulder and didn’t finish the year as he started it. The Bulls were if you already didn’t know set an NCAA record with winning their first 7 games and losing the remanding 6.
Head coach Charlie Strong likes the three players he acquired through the portal. Macon is coming off an injury last year with the Cowboys. He is a good-sized middle linebacker. Macon will help Nico Sawtelle. Sawtelle like Barnett suffered an injury. He had a huge game against the Georgia Tech.
KJ Sails and Devin Studstill will help the defensive secondary. Sails had a total of 8 tackles in 2018. He had a good 2017 year where he had 30 total tackles which 22 were solo. Studstill had 4 solo tackles for the Fighting Irish. Both were used as backups. They will look to make an impact for the Bulls.
I believe that something special is going to happen for the Bulls in 2019. Coach Strong has changed the culture. They will have some tests along the way. One will be opening night on August 30th against the Wisconsin Badgers. I am hoping to once again to be covering the Bulls from the press box as a credential writer. Either way, the Bulls will have an exciting season.
How will USF do in 2019?
